Decorating a small home can be a tricky affair. Afia R Fitriati has a few ideas to get you started.
Whether your residence is a house or an apartment, living in a small space can be a challenge – or an opportunity to tap onto your creative side. Make the most out of your living quarters by following these guidelines:
1. Get organised
Clutter makes a small space feel even more cramped. Avoid clutter by dedicating a space or a container for everything in your house. These clever, space-saving organisational tips by Alejandra Costello might give you some ideas.
In the end, though, getting organised is a habit rather than anything else. So be sure to teach children to put their things away and delegate tidying up duties to every member of the family on an everyday basis. After all, the bright side of living in a small space is that you don’t have to spend too much time cleaning up, so a few minutes every day should be sufficient to keep your home in order.
2. Think multipurpose
Think of more than one way to utilise a space or a piece of furniture. Opt for a lightweight table that can be moved around or one that can double as a storage space. For example, this walnut-finished coffee table is on my furniture wish list because it also functions as a drawing table for kids and a toy box when opened.

3. Mirror, mirror on the wall
One of the classic ways to make a room appear larger is by hanging a mirror in a room. Since a mirror also reflects light, placing it near a light source will make the room feel extra bright. Mirrors with interesting designs or frames can also serve as decorative elements in the room.

3. Embrace vertical spaces
Think of unconventional ways to take advantage of wall space and other unused vertical spaces. With the help of a few hooks, baskets, magnets and a pinch of creativity, you can create some extra storage and free up more space that will make a room feel more spacious. Check out these bathroom ideas for some examples. I also love magnetic-backed containers. They stick easily on a refrigerator door or any metal surfaces, freeing up shelf space in the kitchen.

4. Don’t be shy with colours!
Just because you live in a tiny space doesn’t mean that your walls have to be white or that you have to stick to dull and neutral colours. On the contrary, a splash of bright hues on a few cushions or a strategically placed dark wall can magically make a room appear larger and brighter. Just be sure to balance dark colours with lighter hues and textures to avoid making the room too dark and heavy.

5. Modular furniture
In general, modular or built-in furniture is the ideal choice for small homes because they create a streamlined look and minimise clutter while maximising storage space. With a bit of creativity, an idle corner near the window or a space above the door can be turned into a space-saving book shelf or a cosy reading nook!
